Compositions

Matthew's compositions explore our preconceived notions of what music is and how we perceive it. His works incorporate elements of indeterminacy, drones, and extended periods of silence, and have been published by numerous groups including Organ Canada.

D-I

The first of two indeterminate works for organ, the performer is responsible for controlling multiple elements of the music including, among other things, the overall length of the piece.

D-II

The second of two indeterminate works for organ, the performer is responsible for controlling multiple elements of the music including, among other things, the overall length of the piece. This movement was published by Organ Canada in the Fall of 2016.

Grand Pièce Symphonique

In honour of Canada’s 150th, I composed a new piece for pipe organ that is the 'Symphony to end all Symphonies'. By taking the elements of music we hold dear (harmony, melody, and rhythm) and stripping them of meaning through the use of drones and silence, the result is (in theory) undeniably Western, but in a rather anarchic way.

Out of Order (String Quartet)

A prose piece written for standard String Quartet in which the ensemble must use chance operations to perform a Classical quartet in an entirely new way.
